Frederique Morrel Biography

              Frederique Morrel Portrait    Frederique Morrel

Internationally renowned embroidered taxidermy sculptor Frédérique Morrel creates artefacts to re-enchant the world. Morrel is a preserver of history that would otherwise be forgotten. Her work began with a passion for collecting hand-woven vintage tapestry from the 18th century onwards that she intricately weaves together contrasting eras and images, telling stories of simple, ideal happiness.

The creations are carefully re-made by hand in France using carefully saved vintage tapestries and rescued antlers and fur. The artefacts are designed to re-enchant the world using materials that tell stories of simple, ideal happiness. The connection between the doing, making and experiencing of art is very important, as Frédérique mourns the decline of the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the human hand since the advent of industrially produced design.

In 1990, she started to design decorative objects in 2002, with this evolving into a fully-fledged artistic career through exploring the boundaries that overlap between art, design, and craft, with growing international success.

During Morrel's prolific 25 year long career, her much revered sculptures have been exhibited all over the world including Japan, the USA, London and Paris, and are featured in many international collections. She has also served as a professor of fashion art and design at Ecole Supérieure d’Arts Appliqués Duperré since 1983.
