Two legends become one

If your New Year’s resolutions include seeing more art, we’ve got the perfect exhibition to start 2020 with. After all, why see the artwork of just one of the most influential artists of the late twentieth century, when you can see two legends at work in the National Gallery of Victoria’s newest offering?

In its world premiere, Keith Haring | Jean-Michel Basquiat: Crossing Lines follows the duo’s respective careers through more than 200 artworks, even revealing, for the first time, the many occasions their lives and ideas intersected.

Tony Ellwood AM, Director of the NGV, said: “Haring and Basquiat respectively created powerful and enduring bodies of work rich with symbolic meaning and emotionally-charged political commentary. With works drawn from an array of public and private collections from around the world, this exhibition provides a unique scholarly context for their rise to prominence and lasting influence, firmly embedding them in the lively and diverse social context of 1980s New York.”

Beginning with examples of both artist’s work from the streets and subway stations of New York City, the exhibition presents works from each artist’s first exhibitions, their collaborations with each other, as well as with the likes of Andy Warhol, Grace Jones and Madonna.

Both Keith Haring (American 1958-90) and Jean-Michel Basquiat (American 1960-88) helped to redefine the role of art in public space and public debate and this exhibition celebrates their impact on the art world of the 1980s through socio-political commentary and idiosyncratic imagery.

You can expect paintings, sculptures, photographs and original notebooks all detailing their passionate engagement with social issues, such as racism and the AIDS crisis, presented alongside some of their most acclaimed artworks and motifs including Basquiat’s crown and Haring’s iconic ‘radiant baby’ and dancing figures.

Keith Haring | Jean-Michel Basquiat: Crossing Lines will be on display until 13 April 2020 at NGV International, 180 St Kilda Road, Melbourne, Australia. For more information click here.
