Obama-inspired sneakers could be yours

Barack Obama was undoubtedly the coolest US president in history and Joe has big shoes to fill. According to Sotheby’s upcoming sale, they're not just any shoes either.

Coinciding with the start of Presidents Day weekend, a deadstock pair of President Barack Obama Player Exclusive Nike Hyperdunks, specially made by Nike for the 44th US President in 2009, will be available for purchase on 12 February from 4:44pm EST.

Created in Men’s US Size 12.5, this pair was Nike’s only confirmation sample and have been kept in pristine condition over the last 12 years. They’re considered to be one of only two pairs known to exist – the other is owned by the former commander-in-chief.

On offer for $25,000, the pair will mark the first major drop in Sotheby’s online Buy Now platform – a new and immediate way to purchase fine art, fashion and collectibles, design and antiques, jewellery and watches. The Sneakers Shop will offer collectors the chance to pick up rare modern sneakers, vintage and memorabilia styles.

Considering President Obama’s love for the game, a performance basketball shoe was the natural choice for Nike to honour him. Hyperdunks were also worn by players on Team USA at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games. This custom version includes the official Presidential Seal, embroidered ‘44’s and insoles printed with patriotic graphics including bald eagles with the date ‘1776’ – the year of America’s founding.

Brahm Wachter, Sotheby’s Director of e-commerce development, commented: “It’s a pleasure to bring such a unique item to market. This will mark our first major sneaker drop on the Sotheby’s new Buy Now Sneakers Shop. We hope it will be a slam dunk.”
