Damien Hirst X Officine Panerai

Passions Arabia Panerai Damien Hirst 2

Aptly conceived to explore the idea of a mechanical painter, Damien Hirst has turned his hand to horology with a unique and exciting collaboration with luxury Italian watch company Officine Panerai.

As an object which uses a mechanism to measure the passage of time, the installation of the two works that Hirst has reimagined for the brand at Watches & Wonders ((the first edition in the US region devoted to high-quality watchmaking, founded by the Miami Design District Associates A.K.A. MDDA) was, we think, particularly fitting.

The artist’s Beautiful Spin Painting series is known for each works elongated tile, and the two he has reworked for the exhibit are no exception. Made using household gloss on canvas, over which hundreds of Panerai watch dials were meticulously-assembled in geometrical patterns Beautiful Sunflower Painting (2011) appeared alongside videos, creative installations and dramatic performance works by international contemporary artists that question our perception of time at the Moore building, and his Beautiful Fractional Sunflower Panerai Painting (2011) at Panerai’s flagship store in the Miami Design District.

When speaking about the collaboration, Hirst stated ‘I love Panerai, the watches are timeless and I made this spin painting using black Panerai watch faces without hands in the pattern of seeds in the head of a sunflower…I hope the painting makes you think, we’re here for a good time, not a long time.’
